Two Kearney Business Leaders Shine on National Stage
/In a story published by the BBC, which garnered international attention, two Kearney business leaders were sought out to provide insight and thoughts on recent events which have impacted the world.
Last week, President Donald Trump talked about imposing law and order, and his hardline approach towards the protesters is helping to shore up his base of supporters. The BBC set out to see what the parts of the US that propelled him to victory in 2016 think of his aggressive strategy.
While speaking with folks throughout the country, the BBC spoke with Kearney business leaders Lyle Updike and Brian Watts. Updike, who owns Updike BBQ & Catering, is well known for not only his famous BBQ and classic event space, but being a constant supporter of local first responders and charitable organizations. Watts serves as the General Manager of Kearney's Hometown Radio Station, 102.7FM- KPGZ, which has become a staple in the Kearney Community supporting small businesses as well as local and educational events.
When asked about President Trump's current strategy, Updike said, "I'm strong on law and order. I don't tolerate this violence - this rioting. I'd like to see the president tighten the screws better." He added: "The mayors and governors won't do it, so he needs to."
"For many conservatives, the Trump presidency has been a blessing - spiritually as well as financially," Watts said. He said that he loves the image of the president holding a bible while walking near the White House: "It shows he's for the church." Watts said that the radio station has survived the financial problems brought about by the pandemic, and he is confident that Mr Trump will pull the country out of its malaise.
Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and the riots that followed, Kearney, Missouri rose to the occasion. The support of small business by the community and the dedication to the city by its residents has paid off. Local businesses are starting to re-open and at this time, not one Kearney Business has indicated that they will not be able to re-open as a result of the current events.
