No Immediate Decision on KSD Fall Sports

The Kearney School District released a letter to the community ahead of its August 19 school board meeting announcing that the agenda does not include any action items related to the new recommendations from the health department. Any conversations regarding fall activities will be informational only.

The school district letter is in response to a statement from the Clay County Public Health Department shared on social media August 14, suggesting Clay County school districts choose the new MSHSAA spring season option for fall contact sports.

Social media has been inundated with #LetThemPlay postings and scheduled rallies being planned by parents and fans. A rally is planned at Kearney School District offices at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, August 19. Special guidelines are in place by the event organizer to keep it a civil assembly.

In the letter released today, the school district states, “At this time, Kearney School District is reviewing this information and will continue conversations with the health department, Missouri State High School Activities Association, the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference, and neighboring school districts with similar classifications.”

The letter also confirmed that fall activity schedules will continue as currently scheduled. There has been no indication of a deadline for a final decision to either continue activities this fall or move them to spring. “If it is determined that there is a need to modify the schedule of our fall activities, KSD will send a communication to district families and share the details with the community as well.”
