Winter Weather Arrives With 2022

Winter weather continues to approach the Kearney area. Things may be calm and sunny now, but as 2021 departs, so will our calm weather.

For the rest of Friday, we can expect skies to remain partly sunny, with a high near 57. Light and variable winds will become southwest from 5 to 8 mph in the morning, however, some winds could gust as high as 21 mph.

For tonight, Kearney residents can expect a chance of snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 3am, then sleet likely, possibly mixed with freezing rain between 3am and 5am, then sleet likely after 5am. It will be cloudy, with a low around 20. North northeast wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected and little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected.

On New Year’s Day, snow, possibly mixed with sleet, will transition to all snow after 10am. Temperatures will be falling to 11 degrees by 3pm. Wind chill values between -6 and 4. North winds will be 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible.

On Saturday night there will be a chance of snow before midnight. After midnight, skies will become cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 1. Wind chill values between -2 and -7. North northwest wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

On Sunday the weather will begin to improve, however the temperatures will remain below freezing as despite sunny skies, the high will only be near 19. North northwest wind 5 to 7 mph will become calm in the afternoon.

On Sunday night, skies will remain clear, with a low around 9 and on Monday, skies will be sunny, with a high near 40.
