Girls Soccer on a Roll with 3-1 Record
/The Kearney Bulldog girls soccer team amassed three straight wins after traveling to St. Joe Central to take on the Indians. The Bulldogs sealed the game 3-0 against St. Joseph and improved their regular season record to 3-1.
A slow start was to be expected as the Indians home field is grass, something the Bulldogs are not accustomed to. However, just one minute into the game, the Indians fouled a Bulldog resulting in a free kick. Emily Yakle took the kick, placing the ball perfectly in front of the net, where the Indians keeper scrambled to receive it. A pack of Bulldogs pounced on the ball, but it was Caysi Brown who got a foot on it sending it into the back of the net and scoring Kearney’s first goal of the game.
Emma Weightman took the game’s first corner kick just 5 minutes and 30 seconds later. The ball sailed across the goal falling to the feet of Emily Yakle who kicked it in for the second goal of the night. 2-0 Bulldogs.
The Indians played aggressively in the second half, but the Bulldogs matched their stride and played just as hard. The girls controlled the ball beautifully. Ten minutes into the second half, the Indians fouled Caysi Brown just outside of the box. Coach Hopkins called upon Mia Adkins to take the free kick. Adkins hit the ball well, just as the referee blew the play dead as the Indians had advanced towards the ball too early. Adkins’ second attempt hit the top right corner of the post and scored the team’s third goal.
The Bulldogs will hit the road again on Tuesday to face off against the Smithville Warriors. Junior Varsity will play at 5:00pm and the Varsity game should begin around 6:30pm.
