Inmate Dies at Clay County Detention Center

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a female who was incarcerated in the county’s detention center. The name of the inmate has not yet been released.

A statement released by the Sheriff’s Office says that around 2:20 pm on Monday, May 3, the female inmate, “suffered a medical emergency at the Clay County Detention Center. After transport to a local hospital, she was pronounced deceased.”

Public Information Officer Captain Robert Hays added that the inmate alerted jail staff that she “was having a medical emergency. Guards then activated a Code Blue protocol.” Hays also said an autopsy will be performed that includes a toxicology screening and review of past medical history to hopefully determine the cause of death.

The incident is being investigated by the Clay County Investigative Squad, and autopsy will be performed by the medical examiner’s office. The Investigative Squad is comprised of surrounding law enforcement agencies.
