The man refused to obey the deputies’ commands, and was continuously yelling at deputies to shoot him.

The incident started at about 3 pm on July 13, near Holt. A resident living on County Road CC reported that a shirtless stranger was trying to get into their house. The man was throwing all his weight to try to break down the door, but the resident was pushing back to keep the man out.

After a while the man gave up and started walking away from the house.

When Clay County Deputies arrived, they found the man standing on the road in front of the home. He refused deputies’ orders and repeatedly yelled at the deputies to shoot him.

As deputies assessed the situation, they believed the man was unarmed and were able to talk to him. They de-escalated the situation until the man was able to be safely taken into custody. No one was injured in the situation.

Deputies learned the 45-year-old man was staying at a nearby neighbor’s home.

The Sheriff’s Office has not released the man’s name, but did take him to an area hospital for a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Clay County investigators are still following up on the burglary case.
