Excessive Heat Expected Through Next Week

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for the Kansas City metro area from Friday, July 23 to Wednesday, July 28. Heat index values of up to 105 degrees are possible through this period.

Dangerous heat is expected to build into the area this weekend and persist through next week. Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Heat indices of 100 to 105 degrees are expected each day. Additionally, overnight lows expected to remain above 75 degrees each night, giving minimal relief from the heat.

Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned buildings, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Consider spending the warmest part of the day in public buildings such as libraries, schools, movie theaters, shopping malls, and other community facilities.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
