Bulldog Weekly Sports Recap

School is back in session and Kearney High School athletes are back on their respective fields, courses, and courts. Here is a KPGZ Bulldog Sports recap:

Volleyball

The girls volleyball team started their season this week with a match against Blue Springs South. The Bulldogs lost three straight sets, but competed well.  On September 1, the team traveled to Belton and the girls won in 5 sets.  

The Bulldog home opener ended with a victory against St. Joe Central in 3 straight sets (26-24, 25-18, 25-22).  Kylie Walker lead the team in digs with 17 and ace serves (5).  Sophie Kaster lead in kills with 9, followed by Alli Poage with 8.

Girls Golf

The JV and Varsity golf teams traveled to Adam's Pointe Golf Course on Thursday afternoon to compete against Grain Valley.  Kearney Varsity defeated Grain Valley Varsity, 192-198

Kenzi Kutch was the medalist of the match, shooting a 42 on 9 holes.

Kearney JV defeated Grain Valley JV- 257-263

Kayla Resler had the low score of the match shooting a 61 on 9 holes

 Softball

On Thursday night, the varsity softball team played Liberty North for their first home game of the season. The Bulldogs and Eagles went back and forth for the first four innings and the Bulldogs were down 3-2. The Eagles pulled away in the fifth and sixth inning with some big hits. Jadyn Barnes, Macy Morrow, Sela Lowrance, Mackenzie Herndon, Rory Perry, and Elise Arellano all had hits, but the Bulldogs fell to the Eagles 13-2.

 Boys Soccer

The boys played at Smithville on Thursday night but the goal-scoring drought continued. The varsity team lost 2-0. The varsity record is 0-2, and 0-1 in the conference. The JV won their match against the Warriors 1-0 on a goal from Nick Turley. The JV team is 1-1.

 Girls Tennis

The Kearney Girls Tennis team also kicked off their 2021 season this week. The program has grown to 42 athletes. 

On Monday, the athletes traveled to Oak Park. The girls played a tough match that ended in team scores of Varsity 3-6 and JV 4-5. Grace Kimberlin and  Emmy Beyeler made up the Varsity singles wins. Alayna Dostal and Grace Kimberlin made up the Varsity doubles win. Lilli Gaik and Kendal Ernzen both won their JV singles matches. Baylee Kuebler and Ella Mack, and Alexis Nevins and Shayne Reiter, all won their JV doubles matches. 

On Tuesday, Liberty North's Varsity and JV teams came to compete on the KHS courts. Kearney's athletes competed well against tough competition, however the match ended with a team variety score of 0-9 and 0-9 JV. Kearney's C-team traveled to Liberty North to compete and finished with a team score of 0-9.

Football 

The Varsity Bulldog football team will kick off their season tonight in Platte County as they face off against the 0-1 Pirates.
