Initiatives Ready for Election Day

Election Day is November 2, and while there are no candidates running for office, there are a few important ballot questions area residents should pay attention to. The Clay County Election Board posted these important dates to remember:

September 21, 2021 -Absentee Voting Begins

October 6, 2021 - Last Day to Register to Vote

Clay County residents will vote on Proposition 1, which is a sales tax for law enforcement services:

CLAY COUNTY PROPOSITION 1

Shall the County of Clay extend and impose a county-wide sales tax at the rate of one-eighth of one percent for the purpose of providing law enforcement services for the County to include maintenance of current law enforcement facilities and all operational costs to provide for the incarceration of inmates, including additional law enforcement personnel? This sales tax is an extension of the County’s existing law enforcement sales tax and will not increase the County’s current sales tax levy. The Clay County Commission shall annually appropriate said funds pursuant to law, with said funds to be audited annually.

Kearney will once again vote on a use tax which brings back tax dollars from the purchases of large ticket items over the internet or through the out-of-state sale of items like motor vehicles, boats, and trailers. The Kearney Question reads:

CITY OF KEARNEY QUESTION

Shall the City of Kearney impose a local use tax at the same rate as the total local sales tax rate, provided that if the local sales tax rate is reduced or raised by voter approval, the local use tax rate shall also be reduced or raised by the same action?

Residents who live within the Holt Community Fire Protection District of Clay and Clinton Counties are asked to vote on a tax levy to fund the operations of the district fire department. That question reads:

HOLT COMMUNITY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT QUESTION

Shall the Holt Community Fire Protection District of Clay and Clinton Counties, Missouri be authorized to levy an additional operating tax levy of not more than $0.35 per one hundred dollars assessed valuation to provide funds for the operation of the district?
