One Excelsior Springs Police Officer was wounded in a shootout with a suspect on Saturday, October 1. The suspect was also wounded during the incident and later died.

Two Excelsior Springs Police Officers saw a man they knew had a warrant for his arrest in the Price Chopper parking lot at about 5:12 pm on Saturday. The suspect, 64 year-old Carl J. Carrel, of Excelsior Springs, had a warrant for assault on a law enforcement officer. When the two police officers tried to stop Carrel, he fled on Kearney Road.

The officers attempted to box in Carrel at the stoplight at the corner of Kearney and Corum Roads. One officer stopped his vehicle in front of Carrel’s vehicle and the other officer stopped right behind it.

According to witnesses at the intersection, Carrel attempted to get away by ramming the police car before stopping. The officer of lead vehicle was approaching Carrel’s vehicle when Carrel shot at the officer, hitting him in the right shoulder and wrist.

The officer in the rear vehicle fired at Carrel and hit him in the head. The hit officer and Carrel were both transported to an area hospital. The officer is in stable condition, but will require additional surgery. Carrel died at the hospital.

This is an on-going investigation by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. KPGZ News will update this story as details are released.
