Deputies Safely Capture Armed, Wanted Man
/Clay County deputies safely took an armed man into custody Friday who was wanted for a home invasion in Buckner.
On Jan. 20, Gladstone Police requested assistance when they located a stolen car being driven by 27-year-old Phillip T. Martin at 3:24 p.m. The Buckner Police Department had issued a public alert trying to find Martin, who was wanted for a home invasion that occurred Jan. 19. They said he was to be considered armed and dangerous.
Martin fled from Gladstone Police and deputies, at one point going the wrong direction on Interstate 435 near N.E. 108th Street. Martin then drove off I-435 into a field near Cookingham Drive, got out of the car and took off running. Two deputies chased him and saw he had a gun in his hand. They yelled at him to drop the gun as they ran, but he yelled back for them to shoot him. One of the deputies deployed his Taser, striking Martin. Martin fell to the ground, and deputies got him safely into custody. He had several rounds of ammunition in his pockets, and his gun was located near where he fell. Ambulance crews evaluated Martin, and he was transported to the Clay County Detention Center.
Martin has now been charged with resisting arrest by fleeing and tampering with a motor vehicle in Clay County. He is being held on a bond of $100,000. Any charges relating to the Buckner home invasion would be filed in Jackson County.
