Bulldog Sports Recap

Kearney athletes are in the middle of a hot winter season, and they’re bring their A-game in every sport. Here’s your KPGZ Bulldog sports recap:

Girls Basketball

The Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Platte County for a non-conference game on Thursday, January 26, and came away with a 45-42 victory. 

JoJo Kutch led the Bulldogs with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Jadyn Barnes finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Ryleigh Van Emmerik and Brooke Paalhar connected on 2 three-point field goals and scored 8 points apiece. Van Emmerik also had 3 assists and Paalhar led in steals with 3. Alyssa Quick also pulled down 5 rebounds.

The win brings the Varsity's record to 7-10. The Bulldogs will be in action next week in the North Kansas City Tournament. Kearney will play St. Pius on Monday at 6:30 in the opening round.

Boys Basketball

On Friday, January 20, the Varsity Boys Basketball team traveled to Grain Valley to take on the Eagles for a non-conference match up. The Bulldogs were off to a great start taking an early 11-2 lead to start the game.

The Eagles responded quickly but the Bulldogs were able to keep the momentum and took a 19-15 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Eagles came out hot shooting 5 of 5 field goals in the 2nd quarter and finished the half with a 34-25 lead.

The Eagles were able to extend their lead in the 2nd half and continued to shoot the ball well shooting 12 of 17 from 3. The Bulldogs lost 69-51. Davin Hanna led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points and 4 assists. Manny Linthacum went 4 of 7 from 3 and finished with 12 points. Cameron Webster chipped in 7 points.

Girls Wrestling

On Wednesday, January 25, the wrestlers honored seniors Laney Cecil, Hannah Pendzimas, Ruby Freestone, Elise Arellano, Danica Green, Kennedy McNally, Hailey Romero, and Kailey Romero. The Romero twins rocked the National Anthem before the Girls continued their winning ways. Final Score Bulldogs 60, Griffins 24. The squad moves to 8-0 on the year and 5-0 in the Suburban Blue Conference.

Boys Wrestling

The Boys Wrestling team traveled to Winnetonka to participate in the 52nd Annual Winnetonka Invitational on Friday and Saturday, January 20 and 21. The Boys finished in 16th out of 22 teams with only 8 wrestlers participating.

Congrats to sophomore Ryder Shelton for finishing the tournament as the Runner-Up at 113lbs in a stacked bracket!

Golden Girls

The Golden Girls competed in a regional competition at Lee's Summit North High School over the weekend. They had two awesome performances! Results are below.
