Charges Filed in Spring Lake Beach Shooting

The Clinton County Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against a man accused in the Spring Lake Beach shooting on Saturday.

Prosecutor Brandi McClain charged Ammon J. Preston, 33, of Avondale, with 2nd degree murder, armed criminal action, 2nd degree assault, and 3rd degree assault. A warrant was issued for Preston with a $500,000 cash only bond.

The Clinton County Sheriff's Office said they were called to Spring Lake Beach on SE Mohawk Drive in Lathrop at about 9:25 pm, regarding a report of an armed disturbance. Law enforcement Officers arrived at the scene and found the victim, Randy Turner, 44, of Lathrop. Turner was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said they arrived at the beach with information that the suspect, Ammon Preston, was still at large. A press release by Sheriff Larry Fish states that the suspect was quickly located and arrested.

The victim’s family said the incident happened after Randy Turner intervened in a fight when Preston allegedly placed a 14-year-old in a headlock.
