KPD Reminds Residents of Solicitation Ordinance

The warmer temperatures of summer bring door-to-door sales and solicitations to Kearney neighborhoods. In response to the number of people complaining about these visitors, the Kearney Police Department posted information on their Facebook page in regard to soliciting within the city limits.

There are rules surrounding soliciting in Kearney

“The City of Kearney does have an ordinance restricting door-to-door sales (soliciting) in the City Limits of Kearney, but you must have a “No Soliciting” sign conspicuously displayed,” states the Police Department’s post.

The Department also included the ordinance for people to reference. It requires that people clearly post a notice that states “no soliciting” or similar language for the ordinance to be effective. Any person who enters on the residential property for the purposes of selling is declared to be a nuisance and unlawful.

There is an exception to this ordinance that home owners should understand. This ordinance does NOT apply to selling goods for charitable purposes.

The ordinance also states acceptable hours for door-to-door solicitations are Monday – Friday from 9:00am to dusk or 9:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am – dusk or 9:00pm.

Any person convicted of being a nuisance as described under the city’s solicitation section could face a fine of up to $100.00 and/or up to 60 days in jail.
