Deputy Saves Woman from Overdose

An off-duty sergeant from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office saved the life of a woman who appeared to have overdosed at a local casino.

Casino security called for help in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 6, when they found a 22 year old woman unresponsive on the casino floor. The sergeant who was working off-duty security responded to call for help.

The sergeant thought the woman may have overdosed based on her condition – a faint pulse and she stopped breathing. The sergeant administered of dose of naloxone in an attempt to reverse the effects of opioid overdose.

The sergeant started doing chest compressions while casino staff gave the woman two additional doses of naloxone.

After interviewing the woman and witnesses, investigators believe she took a counterfeit prescription pill that was laced with a very strong opioid, likely Fentanyl.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens to never take prescription medication that is not prescribed to them. Clay County reports that it has experienced an alarming increase in both fatal and non-fatal overdoses related to these counterfeit medications in the last year.
