Brennan Watkins Breaks KHS All-Time Scoring Record in 62-56 Loss to Grandview

The Grandview Bulldogs rolled into the Kearney Fieldhouse Wednesday night to face off against the Kearney Bulldogs.  All eyes were on Brennan Watkins as he entered the game only 20 points shy of breaking the all-time scoring record which was held by 2004 Kearney graduate and Mizzou Football standout, Tommy Saunders.

Watkins did not disappoint as he scored 7 of the 12 points put up by the Kearney Bulldogs in the first quarter.  The Kearney Bulldog defense came out strong, holding Grandview to 9 first quarter points.

Watkins was shooting his way to the scoring record, with 14 points at the half as Grandview pulled ahead, 29-28.

It was all Grandview in the second half.  Offensively, Kearney was held scoreless for much of the third quarter.  Turnovers and missed shots resulted in only 7 points for Kearney’s offense and they were unable to slow Grandview’s double-digit run, giving Grandview a commanding 48-35 early fourth-quarter lead.

The team score was overshadowed with 2:45 left in the contest as Kearney fans celebrated Brennan Watkins scoring his 20th point of the evening, becoming the all-time basketball scoring leader in Kearney history.  He would go on to score 31 points on the night and with 3 more games to go in the season, Watkins’ new all-time points record of 1474 is certain to increase.

Kearney showed signs of life late in the 4th quarter but couldn’t overcome the Grandview Bulldogs who finished with the 62-56 victory.
