Tommy was known as an outstanding, all-around athlete who helped lead the Kearney football team to a Class 4 state title as a senior and led the basketball team to a Class 4 state runner-up finish the same year.

He was a First-Team All-State, wide receiver and defensive back for Kearney, and was named the state’s defensive player of the year by the Missouri Coaches Association.

The football team went a perfect 14-0 his senior year and outscored opponents in the four-game state playoffs by a 218-34 margin.

Saunders scored 3 consecutive touchdowns in the title game giving Kearney a 28-0 lead.  He racked up an 83-yard interception return, followed with touchdown receptions of 18 and 31 yards and ended the day with a game-high 4 receptions for 91 yards. At the time, he held the state Class 4 record for career interceptions (23), and most interceptions returned for TDs in a career (5) and season (5).
