Senators Compromise on Missouri Gas Tax

The Missouri Senate spent most of Tuesday working on the bill that would increase Missouri’s gas tax from 17 cents to 29.5 cents per gallon over the next five years. The Senate spent about eight hours working on the bill before pulling the proposal from debate.

Two Conservative Caucus members, Senators Bill Eigel and Andrew Koenig blocked a vote on the bill, eventually leading to the proposal getting pulled from debate.

On Wednesday, Missouri senators gave initial approval to a gas tax hike. A compromise on the measure that lowered the amount of the increase from 15 cents to 12.5 cents per gallon by 2025 passed in a voice vote on Wednesday.

Missouri has the seventh largest transportation system in the country. The state has not increased its fuel tax since 1996, and the 17-cent gas tax is one of the lowest in the nation.
