Thieves Plague Kearney Three Times in a Month
/There have been three property crimes in the last month in Kearney and police are asking for the community’s help to solve these thefts.
On February 23, Kearney Enrichment Council staff members realized that thieves had struck the brand new bus that transports seniors and youth to local programs and places, such as the food pantry. Sometime between February 15 and 23, thieves stole the catalytic converter from the bus, which was parked in front of the Old Firehouse Community Center.
On March 5, former Kearney Bulldog wide receiver Buster Lawrence reported that thieves had stolen his loaner vehicle. The vehicle was a brown 2017 Chevrolet Cruze with “Heartland Chevrolet Courtesy” on the back window. The car also contained clothing and supplies that were to be delivered to the homeless shelter at Bartle Hall in Kansas City.
In the overnight hours of March 6, a man broke into at least one home in the Cottonwood subdivision. The homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous, stated that the burglar broke into a vehicle in the driveway and used the garage door opener remote to gain access to the garage. The homeowner also stated that the burglar tried to enter her home, which set off the security alarm. The homeowner stated that although the burglar was able to get away with quite a few of her possessions, she is thankful her family is ok.
Remember to keep your home secure by checking locks and garage doors every night. Park your vehicles inside and keep the keys in a secure place. If you can’t keep vehicles in a garage, make sure they are locked and any devices or keys that allow access into your home are removed from the vehicle.
Anyone with information about these crimes is urged to call the Kearney Police Department at 816-407-3700.
