Businesses Hiring Despite Higher Unemployment Rates

Although Missouri’s unemployment rate has stagnated since January, the jobless numbers in Clay County saw a bit of jump this spring, despite the number of businesses who are hiring.

The most recent numbers available from the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations showed Clay County unemployment claims jumped up in May to 6.8% from 4.8% in April. Unemployment ranged from 4.2% to 4.8% in the first quarter of 2021.

Regardless of the increase in unemployment claims in Clay County, businesses in Kearney are desperately looking for workers. Some are so shorthanded they sometimes have to shorten their operating hours or close early because they don’t have enough people to run the business.
