Man Claiming to be a Deputy Attempts Phone Scam

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has received several calls in the last couple of days about a man attempting to scam people by claiming he is a Clay County Deputy.

The scammer tells people he calls that there is a warrant for the person’s arrest because the person failed to show up for jury duty. The caller tells people they must pay nearly $2,000 or face 30 days in jail.

The scam caller has even advised some people that the arrest warrant won’t appear on the Missouri Judiciary’s Casenet web site because the person “hasn’t been arrested yet.”

The Sheriff’s Office advises that this practice is a scam. Deputies do not call people who have warrants and they don’t demand money. If a warrant is issued, it will appear in Casenet.

Callers should hang up on this scammer. If residents have any further concerns, call the Sheriff’s Office at 816-407-3700.
