Bulldogs Fall to Smithville in Home Opener 35 – 0
/Smithville got out in front early with a 9-minute drive ending in a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andrew Hedgecorth to Rhett Foster. Noah Schuetz added the point after kick, putting the Warriors’ first 7 points on the scoreboard.
On the Bulldogs first possession, running back KJ Smith took the opening hand-off from quarterback Ian Acosta for an 8-yard gain.
An up-tempo combination of running and passing moved the Bulldog offense into Smithville territory, putting them in the promising position of tying the game 7-all. Acosta found an open receiver at the 3-yard line, and in a grim flashback of last week’s loss to Platte County, the ball bounced mercilessly from the Bulldog receiver’s arms into the hands of a Smithville defender for the interception.
Smithville running back Hayden Sigg scored his first of two rushing touchdowns on a 3-yard run at the 7:30 mark of the second quarter. The Bulldog defense struggled to contain Sigg as he finished the night with 125 yards rushing on 27 carries. Meanwhile, Hedgecorth, piled on an impressive 252 yards passing, completing 18 of 20 attempts.
The Bulldogs remained scoreless for the rest of the game. With a 3-touchdown fourth quarter, Hayden Sigg, Andrew Hedgecorth and the Smithville Warriors produced 383 yards of total offense in their final 35-0 victory.
The Smithville Warriors climbed aboard their bus with a 3-0 record, leaving Kearney Bulldog players and fans with a disappointing 0-2 start to the 2021 football season.
The Bulldogs travel to Ruskin next week to face the 1-1 Golden Eagles.
