They were getting tired of romance novels. That is why the Clay County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a paperback book and puzzle drive throughout January.

The book supply for inmates in the Clay County Detention Center has been limited by the COVID pandemic, with some of the nonprofits who provided books no longer able to. Several inmates have complained there were only romance novels to read, which did not interest a lot of the 85% male inmate population.

Detention staff members also want to provide jigsaw puzzles to help keep inmates busy. Staff has found that inmates who are occupied are more likely to keep the peace.

So the Sheriff’s Office is hosting a book and puzzle drive from Jan. 3-31. Books must be paperback for inmates’ safety. All genres are accepted.

Paperback books and puzzles can be dropped off in the Sheriff’s Office main lobby at 12 S. Water St. If your organization, church or business would like to be a collection point, please e-mail Public Relations Manager Sarah Boyd sarah.boyd@sheriffclayco.com to make arrangements.
