Cooling Centers Open During Excessive Heat

The National Weather Service upgraded the Heat Advisory for our area to an Excessive Heat Warning on Tuesday. This warning goes through 11 pm on Thursday, July 7 as heat index values up to 110 are possible.

Due to oppressive heat and humidity, several cooling centers have opened up in the area to allow people to shelter during the hottest part of the day.

The Kearney Fire and Rescue Protection District downstairs training area will be open as a cooling center from 8 am to 8 pm. The Fire Department address is located at 201 E. 6thStreet.

All Mid-Continent Public Libraries are also designated cooling centers. Kearney’s library branch is located at 100 Platte Clay Way.

Liberty Community Center’s Cooling Center (1600 S. Withers) is open during their regular operating hours, Mon-Thurs (5am to 10pm) Phone (816) 439-4360.

Salvation Army (5306 N. Oak Trafficway, Gladstone) open 9am-12pm closed for lunch then open again 1-4pm. (816) 452-5663.

Salvation Army (108 W. Broadway, Excelsior Springs) (816) 630-4155.

KC North Community Center (3930 NE Antioch Rd) Only accommodates up to five people at a time. Open 8-5.

**Limited Availability - call before** North Kansas City YMCA Community Center (1999 Iron St., North KC) has a cooling center available during normal hours (5am-8pm). (816-300-0531) Alternatives during business hours are the library and City Hall.
