Bulldog Sports Recap

School is back in session and that means Bulldog athletes have started competing again. Here is this week’s KPGZ Sports Recap:

Cross Country

The varsity girls Cross Country team placed 2nd at the Tim Nixon Invitational on Saturday in the Silver Division. They lost to last year's class three state champion team Father Tolton High School by 17 points.

Six girls medaled: 

  • Alex Kinstler 5th - 19:32

  • Abby Elam 9th - 20:41

  • Olivia Brock 11th - 20:49

  • Gracie Bomar 15th - 21:11

  • Abbi McQuillen 17th - 21:21

  • Heidi Adams 18th - 21:26

The varsity boys team placed 7th. Jordin Vaughn medaled in the JV race, placing 7th with a time of 22:25. The boys JV finished 18th.

Boys Soccer

In first round action of the Excelsior Springs Tournament , the Bulldogs advanced to the semi-finals with a 5-1 victory over Maryville. Scoring for Kearney: Tucker Jones 3, Liam Ridle 1, and Maja Hermon 1. The win moves the Bulldogs to 1-1.

Girls Golf

On Tuesday, September 6, the Varsity girls competed in the Lady Jaguar Invitational at Lakewood Oaks Country Club. It was a full field and the ladies finished 12th overall with a team score of 409. Senior Hailey Parker had the low round for Kearney with an 18 hole total of a 95. Rounding out the scoring for Kearney was Junior Jojo Kutch with a 99, Sophomore Kayla Resler with a 106, Senior Anna Tourney with a 109, and Freshman Riley Walker with a 124 (her first Varsity tournament).

Softball

On Tuesday, September 6, the Varsity softball team took on the Park Hill South Panthers in their first home game of the season. The Bulldog’s bats were hot in the first inning as the girls were able to score six runs. They scored one more run in the bottom of the third inning.

The Panthers did not give up without a fight, and were able to score three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Scoring went back and forth throughout the game. The Bulldogs made 17 hits throughout the game and won 15-9.

Game Highlights:

  • Jadyn Barnes went 4 for 4

  • Jocelyn Lincoln went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs

  • Mackenzie Herndon went 3-4 with 3 RBIs

  • Ryleigh Van Emmerik with 2 for 5 with 1 RBI

  • Sela Lowrance went 2-3 and pitched 4 solid innings

  • Brooke Paalhar went 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs

  • Elise Arellano went 1 for 1 with 3 walks and 1 RBI

  • Alyssa Quick closed out the last 3 innings for the Bulldogs

Girls Tennis

On Tuesday, September 6, the Bulldogs hosted a home match vs St. Joe Central. It was another great night of tennis full of competitive matches, but unfortunately the Bulldogs did not walk away with the win this time. Varsity ended 0-9 and JV 3-6. The team looks forward to seeing these competitors again in upcoming tournaments for a rematch.

Match highlights include:

  • A close match at Varsity #1 doubles, Alayna Dostal(12) and Autumn Ash(12): 7-9

  • A win at JV #1 singles, Kendall Ernzen(12): 7-5

  • Another tie break at JV #3 singles, Laci Powell(12): 6-6 tie break 2-7

  • A win at JV #1 doubles, Kendal Ernzen(12) and Eliza Lohman(12): 6-3

  • A win at JV #2 doubles, Laci Powell(12) and Ella Mack(12): 6-4

  • Another tie break at JV #3 doubles, Alexis Nevins(11) and Shayne Reiter(10): 6-6 tie break 4-7
