Kearney Election Candidates and Issue Finalized

The filing window has closed for candidates running for leadership in the City of Kearney this April. Voters who return to the polls will see a mix of incumbents and a new challenger. There is also a city question voters will be asked to consider.

For Kearney Board of Alderman, in Ward 1, Kathy Barger is running to keep her seat on the board. She will face challenger Scott Stubler.

Incumbent Dan Holt was the only candidate to file for the Ward 2 Alderman position and Mayor Randy Pogue was the only candidate to file for the Mayor’s seat. Although Holt and Pogue are running unopposed, they will be on the ballot for voters to vote for or write in another candidate.

In addition to the candidates, residents will be asked to vote on an ordinance to tax the sale of recreational marijuana. Kearney is among several cities in the Kansas City metro area that will be adding a ballot question to April’s ballot. This is a 3% sales tax only on recreational marijuana and products.

The Board of Aldermen approved the measure to impose a Local Sales Tax for General Revenue Purposes at the Rate of Three Percent (3%) Pursuant to the Authority Granted by Article XIV, Section 2.6(5) of the Missouri Constitution. This ordinance now goes to Kearney voters in April.

Election Day for these candidates and ballot issue is April 4, 2023.
