Bulldog Sports Recap
/The Bulldogs are on a hot streak during the first week of 2023. Kearney Athletic teams are ringing in the New Year with some impressive wins. Here is your KPGZ Bulldog Sports Recap:
Boys Wrestling
The Boys wrestling team played host to Suburban Blue Conference opponents Grandview and Ray South on Wednesday, January 4, at home. The Bulldogs came out hot against Grandview picking up 5 falls in a row and 7 total for the dual. The final team score Kearney 62 Grandview 9. The Bulldogs continued that momentum against Ray South picking up 6 falls in the dual to secure our second win on the night 72-6.
Picking up falls for the Bulldogs were Isaac Clayton, Caden Underwood, Brennen Green, Damien Carter, Kendahl Davis, Tye Mills, Evan Magnusson, Jak Gist, Jase Jackson and Tyler Jarrett.
The Boys are now 3-0 in conference and 3-2 in duals for the season.
Boys Basketball
The Bulldogs were back in action Wednesday, January 4, vs Smithville to kick off 2023. Both teams got off to a slow start but the Bulldogs were able to find the bottom of the basket at the end of the 1st quarter taking an early 13-6 lead. Kearney battled through some Smithville fouls and there were able to knock down free throws.
There were 50 fouls committed throughout the game and the Bulldogs shot 45 free throws. The boys found themselves up by 15 points midway through the 3rd quarter and were able to get the win 59-46!
Davin Hanna had a career night scoring 35 points. Davin was 8/13 from the field and 17/21 from the free throw line. Harvey Sayon finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds. The Bulldogs are now 4-7 on the season.
Girls Wrestling
Over the break, the girls traveled to the Wonder Woman Tournament at Battle High School in Columbia, MO. The tournament featured 84 teams from all over the Midwest and as far away as Matanzas, Florida. After two grueling days of fierce competition, the team ended up in 22nd place out of 84, with two individuals reaching the podium. Freshman Riley Walker finished in 7th place, and Senior Hailey Romero brought home the bronze.
