Clay County Treasurer to Retain Seat
/On February 21, the Clay County Court ruled that Clay County Treasurer Bob Nance would retain the seat in which he was elected to serve a four year term in November 2020.
In the judgement entered by Judge Daren Adkins, the court found that the new County Constitution may not be interpreted or applied to shorten the four-year term to which Treasurer Nance was elected in November 2020.
When the new County constitution went into effect, the county attempted to eliminate the last two years of Nance’s elected term in office.
The court ultimately determined that the Clay County Constitution did not become effective until January 1, 2021, and therefore could not retroactively change the four-year term that applied when Nance was elected in November 2020.
Following the ruling, Nance released a statement which stated, “It is with a humble, yet exuberant heart, that I inform you that I will retain my Treasurer position with the County for the remainder of the four-year term to which I was elected in November 2020. Thank you to all who supported me in this effort.”
