Kearney Releases Proposed 2024 Budget

The City of Kearney has released its proposed budget for FY2024. The proposed budget includes provisions for water, sewer and streets, parks and trails, city staff, the I-35 interchange, and aquatic center.

The City projects an increase in revenues by as much as 8% in 2024 due to inflation and the anticipated opening of Starbucks and Arby’s. The City is projecting to take in $25.8 million, with 31% expected from charges for services, 23% from sales tax, and 19% from debt financing.

One of the City’s top priorities is attracting and retaining existing employees. To achieve this, the City created a new proposed salary plan for all positions, one-step merit increases, employee training and development, and additional budgeted positions.

The City has also prioritized several infrastructure systems for the 2024 budget. Staff will study and analyze transportation systems, water distribution, wastewater collection and the water and wastewater treatment systems to make sure the City is being proactive with maintenance issues. Kearney is also looking at the replacement of failing infrastructure that has reached the end of its life.

The proposed 2024 budget also includes funds to finish the I-35/19th Street interchange, the construction of Hall Park, replacement of 12th Street and Shadowbrook water culverts, replacement of the I-35 water tower, upgrades to the city water plant for taste and odors, engineering and design of a Route 33 trail, and the costs for a feasibility and community engagement process for a city aquatics center.
