Junior High Goes into Lockdown After Threat

Kearney School District officials alerted parents of junior high students that they issued a “Lock and Teach” status on Wednesday, April 27.

The school district advised parents that a student proactively alerted school administrators about a possible threat. The junior high school and LENS were immediately placed in a "Lock and Teach" status, which means that lessons continued with classroom doors locked. Movement was also restricted within the building.

At about 9:56 am, a student reported to a faculty member that she had observed another student with what appeared to be a weapon. That’s when officials placed the building in Lock and Teach status. Multiple students were interviewed during the process including the student in question. It was determined that the “weapon” was actually a pen in the shape of a musket. The investigation took less than two hours and the lock down ended at 11:45 am.

“A search and investigation were conducted. The possible threat was found to be unsubstantiated,” district officials told KPGZ News. “Students and staff remained safe and sound, and classes will continue as normal.”

School and district administrators said the safety and security of the students are their top priorities, and they will follow up in accordance with the student handbook and Board policy.

“As always, we are very proud of and grateful for all the students who stepped forward to alert us about this situation out of concern for their classmates. This is a great example of how the district’s procedures work well, and how the students look out for each other. They are a great example of the true Bulldog Family spirit,” said district officials.
