Suspect Smashes Police Car, Assaults Deputy

A suspect is in jail and facing charges after he allegedly crashed into a Liberty Police vehicle, fled from officers, resisted arrest and assaulted a deputy early on Wednesday, April 27.

Liberty police officers and Clay County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a possible domestic disturbance call in the 400 block of Lightburne Street in Liberty early Wednesday morning.

As officers were preparing to leave the area, they said they heard a car accelerating towards them. As the car approached officers, it accelerated and swerved at the officers, hitting a Liberty Police vehicle and nearly hitting one of the deputies.

Officers and deputies pursued the vehicle until the driver crashed into a ditch near the intersection of B and H highways. The driver, who was the suspect from the disturbance, resisted arrest and assaulted one of the deputies as he was taken into custody.

The suspect is currently in the Clay County Detention Center as charges are pending. Police estimate the damage to their vehicle is about $5,000.
